Interviewing the interviewer: Charlie Cabanas

  • Cloe up of Charlie Cabanas.

When I came across him in a popular tavern in the Salamanca district, I recognised him instantly. Charlie Cabanas is not someone who goes unnoticed, and for me, he is also a familiar figure.

The first thing I do when I wake up or get home is turn on the TV to HitTV to enjoy music and, from time to time, take a look at the videos they broadcast. It's like always having good company. One of my favorite programs is AHITA2, a program of interviews with singers that is broadcast on weekend afternoons. I am a faithful follower of this program!

Charlie Cabanas is an actor, presenter and producer with a solid background in Audiovisual Communication from the Rey Juan Carlos University and in acting at the Corazza Studio. His career as a presenter includes his outstanding work on HIT TV's AHITA2 and his participation in HIT FM's El Ahitador. But his talent does not stop there; in the theater he has played memorable characters in plays such as Romeo y Julieta, Into the Woods and Tirant lo Blanc. He has also worked in short films, music videos and the well-known series Élite.

In addition to his professional career, Charlie is fluent in other languages apart from Spanish: French (he lived in Brussels for five years) and English. He has complemented his training with courses in vocal technique, theatre and languages, which reinforces his versatility in the audiovisual and stage world. A comprehensive talent who knows how to stand out in any medium.

Portrait of Charlie Cabanas.

Your training combines Audiovisual Communication and acting. How has this mix influenced your career as an actor and presenter?

Actually, my greatest learning came when I started working. In 2021 I started as an intern at the radio, starting from the bottom. After two weeks, they gave me a small opportunity and I managed to stand out. Now, every day I get up at 5 in the morning to work at El Ahitador, with a great team. Thursdays are especially more fun and I have the opportunity to enjoy even more with my section "Charlie's Crazy Things". My training as an actor has been key both on the radio and on television, as it has given me tools to communicate with confidence and connect with the public. Interpreting is a discipline that I deeply respect and that I apply in my daily life, keeping up with the demands of my profession.

You work as a presenter on television and radio, as well as acting in theatre and film. What differences do you find between these disciplines and which is your favourite?

I consider myself a person capable of adapting to different media and formats, but, at my core, I am an actor. Each discipline has something unique to offer, but theatre holds a special place in my heart. The direct and immediate connection with the audience, the intensity of being on stage and the magic of each performance being unrepeatable make it an incomparable experience. However, I also feel a great attraction to cinema, which allows me to explore the emotional details of a character in depth, and to television series, which offer the opportunity to develop a role over time. I would love to participate in productions such as “Los años nuevos”, a series that I particularly like. Each medium has its challenges and rewards, but my passion for acting leads me to enjoy them all, always looking for new creative challenges.

In your theatre experience, you have played characters as diverse as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet or Nigel in Something Rotten (Spanish version of the musical Something Rotten). Which role has been the most challenging and why?

Without a doubt, the most challenging role so far has been Nigel in Something Rotten. This character is completely opposite to my personality. I am extroverted and energetic, while Nigel is an introverted, deeply sensitive and romantic young man, who keeps and internalizes his emotions. Playing him was a challenge because I had to explore and connect with more subtle and vulnerable aspects of emotional expression, which greatly enriched me as an actor. That said, in the future I would love to play a character with a strong and overwhelming personality, someone with a "tough guy" air and a certain arrogance, capable of dominating the stage with presence and attitude. I think it would be an incredible opportunity to show another facet as an actor and demonstrate my versatility. I am convinced that this role will come at the right time, and I will be ready to face it with the same passion that I put into all my work.

Your work on shows like AHITA2 brings you into contact with renowned artists. What has been your most memorable interview and why?

Every interview I do on shows like AHITA2 has something special to offer. Even when some artists' music is not necessarily in line with my personal tastes, preparing for the interview, researching their career and listening to their answers is a very enriching process. I always learn something new from their experiences and perspectives, which helps me grow both personally and professionally. However, one of the interviews I look forward to the most is Aitana's. I consider her an exceptional singer, with an admirable career and a unique energy that connects with the public. I'm looking forward to her schedule allowing us to welcome her on our set. I'm sure it would be a memorable experience, not only for her talent, but for the opportunity to explore her vision and passion for music more closely.

The future is uncertain, but… can you imagine presenting Eurovision or walking the red carpet in Los Angeles? What dreams excite you?

(Smiles at the question) I would definitely love to host Eurovision. I think I could bring a fresh and modern approach to the event, connecting with different audiences and adding my own personality to the show. As for being present, or even nominated, at the Oscars... why not? I always say that with hard work, passion and enthusiasm, everything is possible. I never stop dreaming big, but I also enjoy the journey and every opportunity that comes my way. If I have learned anything, it is that perseverance opens doors, and I am willing to give my best to reach any goal that comes my way. Let whatever comes your way, come what may!

Charlie Cabanas on theatre.

Prepared, hard-working, young, tall and, what's more, very handsome… Charlie Cabanas has a bright future ahead of him. From here, I send him all my support, because I am convinced that he deserves it and will go far. I leave it on record for all of you as witnesses! If one day we see him at the Oscars, I can already imagine myself at his side as one of his companions (I got him to promise me this in this interview). And I would love to wear a spectacular dress by a Spanish designer while I walk down the red carpet and enjoy the exclusive after-parties. It's a dream that I don't intend to let pass me by, Charlie was the first to ask me for it! Hahaha, don't forget it!

A suggestion to HITTV, I would love a program like the ones from before… Do you remember Aplauso or something like that? I would be much more up to date with current singers and it would enrich my musical culture. Would that be possible?
